Number 28- Did I Just Say that Outloud?

Offend Nobody--Prompt 28
"If all printers were determined not to print anything till they were sure it would offend nobody, there would be very little ever printed."Benjamin FranklinWhat do you think about censorship? Citizens of the United States are guaranteed the right to free speech, but many Americans feel that this right sometimes comes under attack. Have you seen evidence of this around you, even in your school? If not, have you read about anything of late that could be construed as censorship occurring in the United States?Assignment due: Tuesday, January 29, 2008

To be completely honest I believe America has overdone the whole polically offensive language thing. America was founded on the principle of freedom. That is why it is here, that is why countless men have given their lives for the preservation of this Democratic Republic. If we start hacking away at our rights such as the ability to carry arms and the right to say what we think, soon enough we wont even be able to worship how we believe the Lord God has asked us to worship. This attack against our rights has started at a young age. In one school that I attended the word "gay" was off-limits because it was offensive to some students. People make these rules in attempts to make our world a more loving and friendly atmosphere. The Government is trying to remove racism from America but in the process they have planted a new kind of racism. Now when in the process of hiring employees, many of the major corporations have had to count the number of Latinos, Whites, Blacks, and Asians that they hire so they can make their number even and evade being accused as disriminating against a certain people. Instead of being able to hire those who are ready and equipped for a specific job, they may have to hire a Latino who just happens to be less equipped for the job then an African American who has also put in an application. If we were truly not racist, then it wouldn't matter how many Asians were working at Target, and it wouldn't matter whether or not McDonalds has hired a White guy. I believe that the political world has become so wrapped up in the little details of the Government, like whether or not someone has been offended, that they can't run the Government to it's full potential.

Number 23- Dirty Little Secret

Keeping Secrets--Prompt 23
When you confide in a friend, you hope he or she will keep your secret. Do you think there are some secrets you should not keep for a friend? Or do you think that it's always better to keep you promise and tell no one about your friend's secret, even if someone's in danger?

While I believe that friends are good to confide in, I don't believe that one should confide in his or her friends all the time. There are several reasons for this. First of all, when you're making a friend part of the reason you want to get to know that person is because you don't know everything about them. If you met someone at a birthday party and they proceeded to tell you all about their life in the first half our of your friendship you would probably get a little annoyed and uninterested in that person. Therefore, making yourself a little misterious can be a better way to lengthen a convresation and thus develop a friendship. Secondly, people have their own burdens to carry. If you are constantly dumping all your problems on someone else and that someone is also going through some difficult times you might just overload them with responsibility and stress which is neither healthy for the friendship, or healthy for the friend physically.
Now suppose that you were on the other side of the situation. You are the friend who is being confided in. You are now abliged to keep the secrets of the one who sought your counsel and secrecy. As long as their secret isn't bringing harm to another person, or breaking the law of God, you should keep their secret.

Number 26-

Deserted Island-- Prompt 26
Suppose you will be stranded on a deserted island in the middle fo the ocean for ten years. You will be allowed to bring one each of the following: book, person, CD, food item, drink item, piece of clothing, and one miscellaneous item. List the one item you would bring in each category, and explain why you chose it.You may write your prompt in a list format. This assignement is due: January 17, 2008.

If I was stranded on a deserted island and I could bring one of each of the following, I would bring:

Book: Bible
Person: No one
CD: Michael Buble- Evetything
Food Item: fish
Drink Item: water
Clothing: giant sweat shirt
Misc. Item: Knife

I would bring the Bible because it is the Word if life, and it would bring me into connection with the One who I need most and the One who supplies everything.

I wouldn't bring anyone with me because I wouldn't want to take anyone away from their family. Selfishly I would like to take my mom, but I wouldn't want her to have to be stranded because that wouldn't be fair to my dad and brother and sister.

I would take Michael Buble because he rocks my world... but that wouldn't really matter sense I wouldn'e have a CD player anyway.

I would bring fish because it is rich in protein, vitamins, and calories so it would keep my alive longer then most foods.

I would take water because I have no idea whether or not there would be a good water source that I could use right off the bat. It could take a week or more to find a water source that I could safely drink from.

I would bring a giant sweat shirt because it is a big clothing item and it may come in usefull in if I need some kind of rope or cord to bind sticks together to construct a shelter.

I would bring a knife so that I could make traps for animals, kills things to eat, and cut up branches and bushes and whatever else I might find useful materials.

Number 25? Choking it down

This last Christmas and New Year's was quite eventful. To start off my family had my grandparents over and my brother's girlfriend. To begin the festivities we ate dinner. After offering prayer we dug in to our this once-a-year family gathering. Things didn't go as planned however, and before long my grandma began choking. Her sckewed logic told her that it was embarrassing to choke and that she should hide the fact that she was choking. It was a bad move on her part. She tried drinking a glass of water hoping to dislodge whatever had gotten stuck. It was to no avail however and she was beginning to think that it wasn't coming out. No one had noticed that anything was wrong until she started tapping my grandpa who thought that she wanted him to stop talking. It was then that my mom realized what was going on. She jumped out of her seat, rand over and quickly executed the hymlic. All I can say is that I'm glad my grandma's life was spared this Christmas. It really makes you appreciate family.
